To be eligible for a scholarship, candidates must satisfy the following requirements:
To be considered for a PhD at Stellenbosch University, applicants must satisfy certain requirements. A master’s degree or, in rare cases, an equivalent qualification in the appropriate field is required.
Candidates must have earned a grade point average of at least 65 percent in their master’s programs.
Candidates must be under the age of forty at the start of the program in January of the following year.
It is only possible to apply to one of the Faculty’s research themes.
All pupils who satisfy the requirements will be taken into consideration.

One A4 page letter outlining your qualifications for the scholarship is necessary, as is a research idea note outlining a specific subject or issue that you want to explore throughout your PhD program. All of these information should be included on the application form, in the appropriate areas, of the application form.
Please use the 2022 Study Themes to help you choose a subject for your research. Only current research subjects in one of the Faculty’s academic divisions may accept research topics outside of the specified research themes.
Note that scholarships may only be provided if an appropriate supervisor is available to guide the student’s research.
The mere act of submitting an application does not ensure acceptance. Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Students may not receive any financial aid from the Graduate School at all.
Referee reports attesting to your capacity to finish doctorate studies must be sent by the Graduate School by email no later than August 1, 2022, so please tell your three referees to do so.
